Duties:

  • This position serves as an Associate Deputy Director for the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Policy Office's Correction, Reentry, and Justice Reform team. Provides authoritative findings, guidance, and recommendations on complex criminal justice related initiatives and meetings. Maintains knowledge and dialogues with the criminal justice field on ongoing developments in criminal justice practice, policy and current research and evidence-based practices in assigned areas to ensure that program planning, implementation and review are grounded in current knowledge and needs of the criminal justice field.
  • Represents the organization in developing and maintaining effective relationships with national, federal, state, tribal, and local experts, administrators, high-level officials, policy makers, and planners. Participates in oversight and coordination meetings to ensure quality of and progress on BJA strategies, grant programs, services and technical assistance. Participates in, coordinates, and/or manages agency programs and projects. Provides interagency liaison services to federal agencies providing specific support and services.

    Provides expert advice and guidance on corrections, reentry and justice reform program models and related management of programs tied to grants, cooperative agreements and contracts which are of significant interest to the public and Congress, e.g., the programs that strongly influence multiple agencies, and/or the employee's recommendations directly impact key governmental functions or result in substantial redirection of Federal efforts or policies related to major national, criminal justice issues.
  • Serves as key contact and expert in the assigned substantive areas for activities of the Policy Office and supports the Director, Principal Deputy Director and Deputy Director, as required, in coordinating efforts within and outside DOJ relative to the support of Federal, state and local criminal justice programs. Directs and supervises the development, coordination, and preparation of comprehensive long and short-term program plans. Recommends to the Director, Principal Deputy Director and Deputy Director, the allocation of program resources; and directs the development and implementation of nationally oriented technical assistance and training grants.

    Serves as the lead in developing strategies for planning, development and implementation of major criminal justice agency programs with national impact and in facilitating work with other managers.
  • Directs and manages the planning, development assessment, and management of specific assigned programs to increase the effectiveness and capability of grant programs to address the needs of State/local/tribal governments, justice agencies, and/or treatment practitioners within established timelines.

    Plans, develops, assesses, monitors, and implements specific assigned criminal justice grant programs; establishes program priorities; formulates and defines program objectives; and develops and establishes strategies and milestones for grant programs that improve creation, refinement, and adoption of national initiatives.

    Supervises a group of employees performing work at the GS-14 or equivalent level. Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit.
